Here's some tips.
My friends and I agree that the closer you look to the actual character, the better it will be.
As for characters, do someone you like and can pull off.
I think Zelda would require way too much detail, but something like Kairir from the first Kingdom Hearts or her school uniform would be easy and is feasible for girl s with red and brown hair. There's Ayam from Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven. She's a ninja and really for her all you need is some baggy black cargo-looking pants and a turtle neck sleeveless shirt that reveals your stomach. She's pretty easy.
I think Noriko from Heavenly Sword would be freaking amazing though. That would be fun.
